HERGEN participates in two events on energy and operational efficiency in the paper industry
April 10, 2026

HERGEN participated as a supplier in the modernization of Paper Machine PM5 at Irani Papel e Embalagem, in the city of Vargem Bonita (State of Santa Catarina - Brazil) unit, contributing to the expansion of production capacity and to the technological upgrade of the recycled paper production line for the packaging market.

The project is part of Irani’s investment program under its Gaia Platform and includes an estimated investment of R$ 89.7 million in machine modernization. With the technological upgrade, the company estimates an production increase of approximately 7%, representing a gain of about 700 tons of paper per month.

In this context, HERGEN supplied technological solutions for different sections of the machine, with emphasis on increasing drying capacity and modernizing other machine sections, including forming, press, and a new hydraulic pope reel, within the scope of supply under HERGEN’s responsibility.

Among the main supplies are 33 new Smart Steel Dryers developed by HERGEN and manufactured in carbon steel, featuring a slightly larger effective drying area, contributing to higher thermal efficiency, operational stability, and increased production of the paper machine.

In addition to the modernization of the drying section, HERGEN also supplied a new hydraulic pope reel, designed with a focus on operational safety and fully compliant with NR12 (Brazilian safety standard) requirements, incorporating extended rails and an automated shaft (spool) feeding system.

The solutions that were implemented are part of the ECOPerformance program, a HERGEN initiative focused on developing technologies that promote higher energy efficiency, resource optimization, operational safety, and improved performance in paper machines.

Higher efficiency in heat transfer, reducing the energy consumption of this process

Lower specific energy demand, leading to reduced emissions associated with production

With the modernization, the paper machine, now operates with higher operational efficiency, increasing paper availability for conversion into corrugated board sheets and boxes. HERGEN’s participation in this project reinforces its role as a specialized manufacturer in the development and supply of technologies for paper machines, supporting papermakers in the modernization of industrial assets and in improving productivity, energy efficiency, and operational safety.

Modernization projects such as the one carried out on Irani’s PM5 demonstrate how technological upgrades to the drying system can transform the performance of a paper machine, increasing production capacity, reducing operating costs, and raising standards of safety and industrial efficiency.

If your machine needs to produce more, consume less energy, and operate with greater reliability, HERGEN’s Smart Steel Dryer technology may be the solution for it.
